Butler Douses Flames In Horizon League Championships
Nov. 16, 2001 MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Butler volleyball team cruised to a three-game victory (30-17, 30-22, 30-26) over UIC in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament on Friday (Nov. 16) at the Klotsche Center. The win boosts No. 5 seeded Butler to 12-12 on the season, while No. 4 UIC ends its season with a 15-15 mark. The Bulldogs jumped out early in game one, and never looked back, winning 30-17 while hitting .406 as a team. The two teams were tied 17-17 in game two before freshman Sara Gallagher served up eight straight points, giving Butler a 25-17 advantage. The Bulldogs would go on to win the game 30-22. UIC put up a better fight in game three, as the Flames held a 25-23 lead down the stretch. But, Butler's Keely Norris and Areal Bienemy would each record key kills for the Bulldogs, giving their team a 30-26 triumph. The Bulldogs ended the game hitting .291, while holding UIC to a .139 clip. The Bulldogs recorded 10 service aces, including four off the hand of Allison Cox, compared to the Flames' four aces. Norris and Andrea King led Butler with 12 kills apiece, while Bienemy led Butler's defensive effort with a match-high 16 digs. Setter Amanda Matthews dished out 39 assists on the match. UIC was paced by Gina Caneva's 10 kills. Teammates Vicki Lublow and Teaha Shepperd each had nine digs on the match and setter Dawn Strahanoski chipped in 30 assists. Butler will face the winner of top-seeded Loyola and No. 8 Youngstown State tomorrow (Nov. 17) at 3:30 p.m. (EST) at the Klotsche Center in the Horizon League Tournament semifinals. |
