Bulldogs Finish Sixth at Chicago Spring Challenge

March 29, 2004

The Bulldogs overcame an injury to "All-Horizon League" performer Kali Carter and stiff competition to finish sixth overall in Saturday's Palos Court "Chicago Spring Challenge." The Bulldogs' win over Wisconsin in pool play earned Butler a place in the tournament's gold bracket.

Carter suffered a sprained ankle in the first match of gold bracket play, as the Bulldogs fell to Tennessee. All-America honorable mention selection Areal Bienemy led the Butler offensive attack, while sophomore Megan Knightly served as the team's libero, a transition from her outside hitter position from the fall season.

Butler takes next weekend off, preparing to host the Butler Spring Fling on April 10 and a second all-day event April 17. The field for the 10th includes Illinois, Bradley, Western Kentucky, Findlay and Indiana State with play beginning at 9 a.m.

Teams participating on the 17th include in-state rivals Ball State, IPFW and Indianapolis, in addition to Wittenberg and St. Francis.

The 18-team Chicago field included four teams from the Bulldogs' fall schedule and several teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Butler finished the 2003 season with a record of 20-12 and advanced to the Horizon League tournament semifinals. The Bulldogs' spring roster includes the 12 Bulldogs who will return for the 2004 season.
