Two Wins Send Bulldogs to Horizon League Championship Match
April 22, 2006
Behind a pair of strong performances Saturday, Butler will tangle with UIC Sunday morning in the championship match of the Horizon League women's tennis championship. Butler defeated Detroit, 4-0, in quarterfinal play before pulling out a closely-contested 4-3 decision over second-seeded Youngstown State in the semifinals. The Bulldogs will face top-seeded UIC Sunday morning at 10:15 a.m. at the North Central High School courts in Indianapolis. Against Detroit, Butler won the doubles point and then got singles wins from Tayo Bailey, Michelle Hawes and Chelsey Casperson to clinch the match. In postseason action, once a team wins four points, the remaining matches are stopped. Butler's clash with Youngstown State came down to the wire. The Bulldogs took the doubles point with Alaina Griffin and Kaitlin Elliott taking the top doubles match in a tiebreaker. Butler then received singles wins from Bailey (No. 2) and Shaden Dowiatt (No. 6), but YSU claimed singles wins at the third, fourth and fifth seeds to tie the match at three. Griffin dropped the first set against Emily Thayer in a tiebreaker before rebounding with 6-4 and 6-0 sets to clinch the match. Butler's win over Youngstown State avenged a loss to the Penguins earlier this season. Butler's appearance in the league championship is its seventh in the last eight seasons. UIC has won all eight of those championships.
