Butler Faces UW-Green Bay In Horizon League Tournament

May 8, 2007

Butler will face UW-Green Bay for the fourth consecutive game when it begins play in the 2007 Horizon League Softball Championship on Thursday, May 10, at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs are seeded sixth in the double-elimination tournament, which is being played at Viking Field in Cleveland, Ohio. The eight-team tournament runs through Saturday, May 12.

Butler (24-22, 7-8 Horizon League) and UW-Green Bay (17-21, 9-7 HL) are coming off a three-game series on the final weekend of regular season play. The Phoenix, seeded third in the tournament, won all three regular season meetings, including a 9-6 decision in eight innings in the final regular season game. That final game lifted UW-Green Bay into third place in the league standings.

Loyola (20-19, 14-5) earned the top seed in the tournament and will face #8 Detroit (11-29, 3-14) at 4 p.m., in the first round. Host Cleveland State (29-12, 8-6), the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will meet #7 Wright State (21-33, 8-10) at 9 a.m., and #4 UIC (18-31, 8-7) will play #5 Youngstown State (16-20, 7-7) at 1 p.m.

A win over UW-Green Bay would send the Bulldogs against the winner of the Cleveland State-Wright State game at 9 a.m. on Friday, May. 11. The loser of the Butler-UW-Green Bay game will play the loser of the Cleveland State-Wright State contest at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The Bulldogs already have clinched Butler's first .500 or better record since 1991. This year's team needs two wins to tie the school record for victories in a season (26), set by the 1982 squad.
