April 28, 2002 CHICAGO, ILL. - While enduring frigid temperatures, the Loyola softball team swept Butler taking both games by the score of 3-1 on Sunday (Apr. 28) at Loyola Softball Park. The pair of wins keep the Ramblers perfect in Horizon League action, as they improve to 19-20 overall and 10-0 in the league. The Bulldogs, which have lost their last five outings, drop to 12-22 and 5-9 in league games. In game one, Butler put a run on the board in the top of the first inning as junior Jeri Keller led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a groundout. The Bulldogs' lead was short-lived however, as the Ramblers struck for three runs in the second inning. Allison Scanlin's pinch-hit single scored Ashley Gibbons to tie the game up 1-1. Sarah Lamkin, who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a passed ball to put Loyola ahead for good and Keilah Williams' RBI single to center field gave the Ramblers all the offense they would need. Senior Sarah Smith earned her tenth victory of the season as she scattered three hits and struck out seven. Lynn Hohs went the distance for Butler, allowing six hits and two earned runs. Loyola scored first in the nightcap as Natalie Martin singled home Williams in the top of the first inning. Butler answered with a run of its own in the third inning to knot the score up at 1-1, as Cameo Wrasse's double to right field scored Andrea Keech, who had reached on an error. Martin again sparked Loyola's offense, recording a solo home run down the left field line in the fourth inning to put the Ramblers ahead, 2-1. Sue Stanley also added to the host school's run total as she blasted a shot off the left field scoreboard in the sixth inning to give Loyola its final 3-1 advantage. Wrasse went 2 for 4 with a run scored in the nightcap, while Jamie Bradley was 3 for 4 at the plate. Junior Melissa Benter took the loss for Butler on the mound, falling to 5-11 on the season, while Carole Gorecki picked up the win for Loyola. Butler will return to action tomorrow (Apr. 29) traveling across town to take on IUPUI in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. |
