Bradley Hits Two Bombs; Bulldogs Get Two Wins

May 8, 2004

Box Score

The Bulldogs took both games of a doubleheader at Youngstown State Saturday to improve to 10-9 in Horizon League play and 16-36-1 overall with late-inning heroics in both games. The Penguins fall to 28-20 (7-7) with the losses with the regular-season finale looming Sunday for both teams, as the squads face off at 11 a.m. (EST) in Youngstown.

In the first game, the teams held each other scoreless until the Penguins pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth against Butler starter Melissa Benter. Junior Lynn Hohs singled to left field to open the Butler seventh and was sacrificed to second base by Heather Ryan. After a Penguin wild pitch advanced Hohs to third, freshman Jill Meinhold scored her with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

In the top of the eighth inning, senior Jamie Bradley hit a two-run homer to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 win. Benter made the lead stand up, going eight innings and scattering 12 hits. With the win, the senior improves to 7-10 on the season. Bradley, Hohs and junior Melissa Lemrick each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

In the second game, the Bulldogs used five hits and a Penguin error in the third inning to put up three runs to get out to an early 3-1 lead and held on for a 5-4 win. The same cast of characters did the damage for the Butler offense in the nightcap as in the first game, as Lemrick, Hohs and Bradley combined for seven of the Bulldogs' 12 hits. Bradley hit another two-run shot in the top of the seventh. The bomb proved to be valuable as the Penguins mounted a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh before freshman Jamie Wonderly (6-13) closed out the Penguins.

The teams close out their respective regular seasons Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m. (EST). Both teams will enter the Horizon League tournament Wednesday at UIC in Chicago.
