Bulldogs Fall At Home In Eight Innings
May 6, 2007
Visiting UW-Green answered two Butler come-from-behind attempts with a three-run rally in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-6 victory and a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs at the Butler Softball Park on Sunday, May 6. The win in the final regular season series for both teams lifted UW-Green Bay to 17-21 on the year and 9-7 in the Horizon League. Butler slipped to 24-22 overall and 7-8 in league play. The Phoenix loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning on a pair of walks and a single off of Butler's Nikki Naffziger (5-4). Jenny Rehfeldt then broke the 6-6 deadlock with a single to centerfield, and Jenna Woepse and Krissy Hanson each followed with run-scoring singles. Righthander Anna Bluemel set the Bulldogs down in order in the bottom of the eighth frame to pick up her second victory of the series and her fifth in 16 decisions this season. UW-Green Bay carried a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning, but the Bulldogs exploded with a five-run rally to take their first lead of the series. Highlighting the outburst were back-to-back home runs by junior Jenny Jacobs and sophomore Alex Boros. The first round-tripper was the team-high eighth of the season for Jacobs, while Boros slugged her third home run. Senior JoAnna Zumbrun opened Butler's sixth inning rally with a double to left field and junior Amy Hyerczyk followed with a walk. Freshman Bridget Paine then singled to right field, scoring Zumbrun and ending Butler's string of 17 scoreless innings against the Phoenix. Jacobs then tied the game with a three-run shot over the centerfield fence and Boros followed with a solo shot over the right field fence to give Butler a 5-4 advantage.
The Phoenix scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to go back on top, but Butler answered with a run on a sacrifice fly by Boros to send the game into extra innings. Zumbrun, playing her final game at the Butler Softball Park, led the Bulldogs with a pair of hits in the game. Senior Jill Meinhold had one hit in three trips to the plate and senior Jamie Wonderly chalked up four strikeouts in two and a third innings as Butler's startintg pitcher. |
