Bulldogs Fall Twice At Home

May 5, 2007

Box Score

Visiting UW-Green Bay used two strong pitching performances to post a doubleheader sweep of Butler in a Horizon League twinbill at the Butler Softball Park on Saturday, May 5. The Phoenix captured the opener, 3-0, and then took the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings. The sweep lifted UW-Green bay to 16-21 on the year and 8-7 in league play, while Butler slipped to 24-21 overall and 7-7 in league action.

Junior Anna Bluemel blanked the Bulldogs on three hits in the opener to prevail in a pitching duel with Butler's Jamie Wonderly. Bluemel didn't allow a runner past second base and spread Butler's three hits over three innings. Sophomore Alex Boros, who had two of Butler's three hits in the game, had the Bulldogs' lone extra-base hit with a two-out double in the second inning.

Wonderly (9-8) cruised through the first five innings, before giving up three runs in the top of the sixth frame. Freshman Krissy Hanson provided the big blow with a two-run, home run to leftfield. Freshman Katie Cooney added a run-scoring single in the inning.

Cooney took the mound in the second game and stopped the Bulldogs on five hits. She had six strikeouts and no walks in her five innings of work. Sophomore Mollie Kaebisch provided all of the offense the visitors needed with a pair of home runs and a double, and six runs batted in! The Phoenix roughed up three Butler pitchers for 10 hits in the run-shortened contest.

The two teams will conclude the regular season and the three-game series with a single game at the Butler Softball Park on Sunday, May 6. The game is slated for 11 a.m., and Butler's three senior players, JoAnna Zumbrun, Jill Meinhold and Wonderly, will be recognized prior to the contest.
