Bulldogs and Detroit Split Saturday Doubleheader

April 29, 2006

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

With a steady rain falling most of the day, Butler and Detroit split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis. Detroit pulled out game one, 2-0, in eight innings before the Bulldogs rebounded to take the nightcap, 6-3. Butler is 17-25-1 overall and 4-13 in the Horizon League, while the Titans are now 13-25 (9-6).

In the second game, Butler pushed across five runs before the Titans could crack the scoring column. In the bottom of the first, junior JoAnna Gonzalez led off with a single and scored on Amy Hyerczyk's one-out double. Jenny Jacobs then doubled in Hyerczyk one batter later. A walk and an error put two runners on for the Bulldogs in the second inning. Gonzalez doubled in both runners before Hyerczyk plated her for the second time in the contest with a double.

Detroit pushed across one run in the top of the fourth off Butler starter Nikki Naffziger. Detroit then clawed closer in the fifth, using four hits to push across two runs. Up 5-3 in the sixth inning, Butler got an insurance run from junior Katie Bell, who sent a shot to left field for her first career home run.

Naffziger allowed just one hit to Detroit over the last two innings to secure the win, improving to 4-4 on the season. She allowed eight Titan hits. Detroit's Brittney Hire (4-12) allowed five runs in 1.1 innings of work. Hyerczyk and Gonzalez each had two of Butler' seven hits.

In the opener, neither team could push a run across through seven innings and the game went to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Jacqueline Nortman led off the inning with a single and was followed by a Sarah Dickey bunt single. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Michelle Baggio delivered a sac fly to right, scoring Nortman for a 1-0 lead. Kaleigh Rafter then singled to score Dickey for the 2-0 Detroit edge.

Detroit's Lindsay Roy worked herself out of a jam in the bottom of the inning. After a one-out double by Jamie Wonderly, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs, Roy got Gonzalez to fly out end the game and give the Titans a 2-0 win.

Butler managed just three hits in the first game, singles by freshmen Alex Boros and Tara Long to go along with Wonderly's double. Wonderly was the hard-luck loser for the Bulldogs, allowing eight hits and the two runs in eight innings of work. She falls to 6-12 on the season.

The two teams close out the series Sunday in a 1 p.m. single game. Senior Meghan Howard will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
