Bulldogs Split With Instate Rival IPFW
April 24, 2003 FORT WAYNE, IND. - The Butler softball team split the series with non-conference rival IPFW, capturing a 6-1 win in game one before allowing the Mastodons to grab a come-from-behind 3-2 victory in the nightcap at the IPFW Softball Field. The Bulldogs are now 15-26 on the season, while IPFW stands at 15-20 overall. After three innings of scoreless action, Butler got things going in the top of the fourth when Jen Zorger's double to centerfield scored Sheena Fennell, who was pinch-running for Heather Ryan. Zorger and Jamie Bradley also scored in the inning off of an error, to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs would score three more runs in the next inning, as Butler tallied five hits on the inning, scoring Jeri Keller, Andrea Keech and Melissa Lemrick. IPFW scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh but the Bulldogs had already put it out of reach. Lynn Hohs garnered the win, scattering nine hits in her seven innings pitched. She is now 3-5 on the season. Butler grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Cameo Wrasse scored after reaching on a double to leftfield. The Mastodons would go four innings without scoring before Crystal Fisher's double scored two of her teammates. IPFW got on the board once more, off a Butler error, to pull ahead 3-1. Bradley's double in the top of the sixth scored Ryan, who led off the inning with a single, bringing the Bulldogs to within 3-2. But, the Mastodon's defense tightened up from there, as the hosts walked away with the Game Two victory. Meghan Howard (5-5) took the loss for the Bulldogs, fanning six while going the distance. Butler will return to action this weekend when they travel to Detroit to face the Titans in a three-game series. |
