Wright State Drops Butler 4-3 With Late-Inning Comeback
April 13, 2003 DAYTON, OHIO - The Wright State softball team rallied with two runs in each of the final two innings to pull out a 4-3 win over the Butler Bulldogs in the rubber game of their Horizon League series Sunday afternoon. Catcher Heather Ryan staked the Bulldogs (12-21, 3-8 Horizon) to a 2-0 lead with an RBI double to the left center field gap in the first and then drove in the second run with a single through the right side in the third. Butler then added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of first baseman Jamie Bradley. The Raiders began their comeback with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, shortstop Erin Hanlon reached on an error and advanced to second on a groundout from right fielder Lauren Boggs. After a walk to center fielder Amy Price, first baseman Stephanie Salas plated Hanlon with her second hit of the game, a single to right center. Price, who went to third on the Salas hit, then scored on a double steal with pinch-runner Haley Orwick. Wright State completed the comeback and took the lead for good with two more in the sixth, all coming with two outs. Second baseman Carly Rutherford was hit by a pitch and designated player Sandra Breiby singled to center. That brought Hanlon to the plate and she drove the first pitch into the gap in left center for a double that knocked in both Rutherford and Breiby to put WSU up 4-3. It was then left to Raider starter Kristin Bultinck, who picked up two quick outs before third baseman Melissa Lemrick singled to left and Ryan walked. Bradley then worked the count full before Bultinck struck her out looking to end the game. Bultinck struck out 11 while allowing eight hits and three walks. Jennifer Sundin (1-5) took the loss for Butler, giving up just two earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks. Ryan finished with three hits overall for the Bulldogs, while Lemrick had two hits as did center fielder Andrea Keech. The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday, April 15 when they visit Bradley for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. |
