Bulldogs Fall, 7-1, to Purdue in Indianapolis
April 1, 2004
Purdue used a four-run fourth inning to put Wednesday's game against Butler out of reach, finishing off the Bulldogs 7-1. The game was shortened to five innings after rain started in the top of the sixth. The Bulldogs drop to 6-22 on the season, while the Boilermakers improve to 22-10. The game was a make-up contest from Tuesday's doubleheader that was postponed in West Lafayette. The teams played Wednesday's game in Indianapolis. Butler got out to a quick start Wednesday. Freshman JoAnna Gonzalez led off the bottom of the first with a single and advanced to second on an Angie Johnson single. After Melissa Lemrick's sacrifice bunt, senior Jamie Bradley singled up the middle to score Gonzalez and give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 win. However, Purdue would respond with a single run in the second, two in the third inning and the four-run fourth inning. Sophomore Meghan Howard pitched five innings for the Bulldogs, allowing eight hits and one walk. Due to three Bulldog errors, only five of the Boilermakers' seven runs were earned.
The Bulldogs travel to Cleveland for a three-game Horizon League series with Cleveland State Saturday and Sunday. Butler carries a 2-1 league record into the series.
