RedHawks Outlast Bulldogs in Pitching Battles

March 25, 2004

Box Score

Butler and visiting Miami (Ohio) combined for only three runs over 18 innings Thursday, but it was enough to land the RedHawks a pair of shutout wins.

In Game 1, Miami's Amy Poggendorf was perfect through six innings and had faced the minimum through 10 innings against a Butler offense that struggled looking for a big hit. Butler senior Melissa Benter matched Poggendorf inning for inning, as the pitching battle extended 11 innings. RedHawk shortstop Bianca Paz provided all the scoring with a two-run double in the top of the 11th.

In the second game, freshman Jamie Wonderly scattered five hits in seven innings, taking the loss by allowing a single run in the second inning. The Bulldogs' Lynn Hohs and Melissa Lemrick had the two Butler hits. With the two losses, the Bulldogs drop to 4-20 on the season.

The Bulldogs open their Horizon League schedule Saturday against Detroit. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. Butler concludes its homestand Sunday with another 1 p.m. battle with the Titans.
