Northern Iowa Sweeps Bulldogs In Doubleheader
March 19, 2003 INDIANAPOLIS - Northern Iowa swept the Butler softball team in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Bulldog Park. The Panthers claimed 9-4, 14-7 wins over the Bulldogs, as Butler's record drops to 5-9 overall. The Panthers scored three straight runs in the top of the third and three more in the following inning to take a 6-0 lead in game one. Cameo Wrasse answered in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun, but UNI scored three more runs in the fifth to push ahead to 9-1. Jamie Bradley recorded a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth and her single to right field in the sixth inning scored Andrea Keech and Meghan Johnson. But, the Bulldogs would get no closer as Katie Marshall took the loss on the mound. Melissa Phelps picked up the win for the visitors, while fanning two. In the second game, Northern Iowa again took an early lead as a pair of walks proved costly when Kelly Strellner's double drove in a pair of runs in the second inning. Bradley again answered with a solo homerun, to cut the gap to 4-1, but the Panthers would score in the third to take a 5-1 lead. Butler got it together offensively in the fourth, scoring five runs, which included a two-run homerun off of Wrasse's bat, followed by a solo shot from Heather Ryan. Jess Stephens then scored off of Keech's single up the middle to put the Bulldogs on top, 6-5. But, UNI's four-run sixth inning ended up being the difference in the game. The Panthers reached on back-to-back errors, setting up Michelle Davis' two-run single to give UNI the go-ahead run. UNI would then score twice more before the end of the inning to head into the final stanza up 9-6. Andrea Walker recorded her first career homerun in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be the final time the Bulldogs would get on the board. The Panthers then scored five runs, including a pair of homeruns, in the top of the final inning to give UNI its final margin. The Bulldogs will participate in the Purdue Invitational this upcoming weekend (Mar. 22-23), where they will face the host Boilermakers, Michigan, Gardner-Webb and IPFW. |
