Butler Sweeps Horizon League Awards
Nov. 6, 2002 MILWAUKEE - The Butler women's soccer team swept the All-Horizon League honors as senior Amy Morrison received Player of the Year honors, Head Coach Woody Sherwood was named Coach of the Year and freshman Kate Lord received Newcomer of the Year honors. Voting was conducted by the League's head coaches. Morrison enters this weekend's Horizon League Championship, hosted by UW-Milwaukee, as the League leader in points (39), goals (17), shots (80) and game-winning goals (6). The 5-10 forward most recently became the school's all-time points leader (112) and is tied for the top spot in career goals (44). Morrison also holds the single game (4 vs. Loyola) and single season (17) records for goals. The three-time Horizon League Player of the Week was named to the All-League first team in 2000 and 2001. Sherwood, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the Bulldogs, has guided the squad to a 13-5 overall record, tying the school record for wins in a season, which was set by the 2001 team, which went 13-7. Sherwood is 38-34-4 while at Butler and is 60-51-6 throughout his six-year career. Lord, one of three freshmen starters for the Bulldogs, played a key role in helping the Bulldogs record six shutouts this season, while starting in 14 of the team's 15 matches at the center midfielder or outside defender position. Joining Morrison on the All-League first team is junior defender Annie Doerr and Lord. Doerr has compiled more minutes than any other player this season, and was an essential element in Butler's defensive strategies. Senior Hadiatu Dumbuya and freshman Meredith Buemi were named to the Second Team All-League. Dumbuya, who has been battling an ankle injury throughout the latter part of the season, was named to the all-league first team in 2000 and 2001. Buemi has started and played in all 15 of Butler's matches at the outside right midfield position and has tallied ten total points (2 goals, 6 assists) on the season. Buemi was also named to the league's All-Newcomer team along with Lord. Second-seeded Butler enters the Horizon League Championship with a 5-1 mark in league action and will take on No. 7 Youngstown State in the first round of the tournament tomorrow (Nov. 7) at 5 p.m. If the Bulldogs advance, they will battle it out against the winner of the No. 3 Detroit/No. 6 UW-Green Bay match at 6 p.m. on Friday. The championship bout is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday. |
