Butler Hosts 2004 Horizon League Championships
Nov. 3, 2004 Click here to view the full release as a PDF BUTLER HOSTS 2004 HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Horizon League's automatic NCAA Tournament bid is up for grabs this weekend as Butler plays host to the 2004 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championships. All eight teams will be in action Thursday at Kuntz Stadium, with the four winners shifting to Varsity Field on the Butler campus for the semifinals Friday and championship match Sunday. In Thursday's final quarterfinal match, the Bulldogs (7-9-2) host UW-Green Bay at 5:30 p.m. Butler finished the regular season with a 4-3 record, including a 2-1 win at UWGB Oct. 15, securing the third seed in the championships. Friday, Nov. 5 - Semifinals (Varsity Field) 11:30 a.m. - Winners of Friday's 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. matches 2:30 p.m. - Winners of Friday's 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. matches Sunday, Nov. 7 - Championship (Varsity Field) THE WEEK THAT WAS: Butler concluded the regular season with a 1-1 week. In a match re-scheduled from a week earlier, Butler used a Kristin Harnest first-half goal to defeat visiting IUPUI, 1-0. Senior Katie Sanders went the distance in goal for the Bulldogs, recording her second solo shutout of the season and Butler's sixth of 2004. Host Indiana got four goals in the first 12 minutes of Friday's match and went on for a 4-0 victory in Bloomington, Ind., to close the regular season for both teams. BIG FINISH: The Bulldogs clinched the third seed in the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Cleveland State Oct. 24. It was the largest goal output of the season for Butler, which got a hat trick from Kristin Harnest and the first goal of senior Kristen Aaltonen's career. It was Senior Day at Varsity Field, as the team's four seniors - Aaltonen, Deirdre Connor, Rachel Pivarnik and Katie Sanders - were honored. Sanders scored the win in goal for the Bulldogs. UW-Milwaukee clinched the top spot in the upcoming Horizon League Championships with a 2-1 overtime win over previously-undefeated Detroit that same day. QUICK SHOTS: Thirteen of the Bulldogs' 18 matches this season have either ended in a draw or a one-goal decision. Butler has won the remaining four games by a score of 13-4...Sophomore Kristin Harnest has scored four of her six goals on the season in the Bulldogs' last three matches, including a pair of game-winners. BULLDOGS PICKED SECOND IN PRESEASON POLL: The coaches of the Horizon League have selected Butler to finish second in the upcoming women's soccer season, the Horizon League announced Aug. 17. UW-Milwaukee received 47 points, including six of a possible seven first-place votes. Butler finished in second place with 41 points, including one of the eight first-place votes. |
