Five Bulldogs Collect Horizon League Postseason Honors

Nov. 2, 2005

For the fourth time in their respective careers, Butler seniors Meredith Buemi and Kate Lord have been recognized with postseason honors from the Horizon League. Buemi and sophomore Ashley Twehues earned first-team honors, while Lord and freshman Angie Muir were recognized on the second-team. Freshman Jenny Southard joined Muir on the league's "All-Newcomer Team." The awards were announced Wednesday (Nov. 2) at the annual pre-tournament banquet in Green Bay, Wis. Voting was conducted by the league's eight head coaches.

Buemi appears on the "All-Horizon League" first team for the third time in addition to her 2002 second-team honors. Buemi finished second on the team in goals (five), assists (three) and points (13) during the regular season. Those totals tie her for sixth in the league in both goals and points, while her three game-winning goals lead the Bulldogs and are tied for second in the conference. She is currently tenth on Butler's career goals list with 17 tallies. Buemi is already entrenched on Butler's Top Ten lists for assists (16, tied for fifth), points (50, tenth) and shots (114, tenth).

Twehues gets her first Horizon League postseason honor with 2005 first-team accolades. The 5-11 sophomore helped to control the midfield for the Bulldogs, scoring two goals to go along with three assists. She started all 18 matches and fired 27 shots during the regular season.

Lord is a 2005 second-team honoree. She earned first-team honors in both 2002 and 2004 and second-team recognition in 2003. Lord was also the 2002 "Newcomer of the Year." Slowed slightly by injury, Lord appeared in only 12 matches during the regular season and registered one assist. She joined Buemi in earning "All-Tournament Team" honors at the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Shootout in Hawaii, Sept. 23-24.

Despite a season-ending knee injury suffered in the opening minutes of Butler's match at Youngstown State Oct. 8, Muir continues to lead the team in goals (six), assists (five) and points (17). She and Buemi enter postseason play tied for the team lead in shots with 36. Muir twice picked up Horizon League "Player of the Week" accolades and was also named to the 17-member Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week Sept. 5. Muir remains in the league's top three in almost all statistical categories, while her average of 1.42 points per game is a league-best.

Southard tallied three goals during the 2005 regular season, including game-winners against both Eastern Kentucky and league foe Loyola. The 1-0 win over the Ramblers earned Butler the tiebreaker over Loyola and the fifth seed in the upcoming league tournament. Thirteen of Southard's 16 shots this season were on goal.

Regular-season champion UW-Milwaukee boasted a league-high three players on the first team. Butler was one of four teams with two players on the first team, joining UW-Green Bay, Wright State and Detroit.

Senior midfielder Sarah Oligney of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay was named the Horizon League's 2005 "Player of the Year," while Detroit head coach Mike Lupenec garnered "Coach of the Year" honors and freshman defender Jess Rooma of Wright State was named "Newcomer of the Year."

Butler, the fifth seed, opens the Horizon League Tournament Thursday against fourth-seeded Wright State. The match is set for 1:30 p.m. (CST) and is the second of four Thursday quarterfinals. The tournament will be held Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 3-6, at Aldo Santaga Stadium on the campus of UW-Green Bay. The winner of Sunday's championship match will earn the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Click here for the 2005 Horizon League Tournament bracket.
