Bulldogs Conclude Regular-Season Portion of Schedule
Oct. 28, 2002 WRAPPING UP THE REGULAR SEASON: The Butler women's soccer team will conclude the regular-season portion of its schedule this week. The Bulldogs (12-4-0) will travel to Bloomington, Ind. to take on the Hoosiers on Wednesday (Oct. 30) at 7 p.m. before hosting Horizon League rival Youngstown State on Sunday (Nov. 3) at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will then participate in the Horizon League Tournament beginning on Nov. 7 on the campus of UW-Milwaukee. CHECKING OUT THE COMPETITION: Indiana, which holds a 9-6-2 overall record this season, leads the overall series against Butler 5-3-0. The Hoosiers solidified a fifth-place finish in the Big Ten with their mark of 4-4-2 and are fresh off a 2-1 victory over Indiana State. The Bulldogs enter into the match against the Penguins with a 4-1 mark in league action, while YSU is 1-16 overall and 0-4 in the league. The Penguins have lost 15 straight, and have only scored one goal against league opponents. SENIOR SEND-OFF: Sunday's match against the Penguins marks the final home contest for six Butler seniors. Amy Morrison, Hadiatu Dumbuya, Sarah Schmidt, Martha Gudiel, Clayr Mimikos and Kristen Drogell will honored prior to the beginning of the match. BLANKING THE BIRDS: Junior forward Krista Rott deflected a shot into the goal with less than 14 minutes remaining to give Butler a 1-0 non-conference victory over visiting Illinois State on Friday. Butler's Deirdre Connor dropped a short pass to Amy Morrison on the left side of the goal, and Morrison blasted a shot at the right post from 15 yards out. Rott charged in from the right side and deflected the shot past the ISU keeper to the right side of the net. Rott's game-winning goal at 76:01 gave the Bulldogs one of their biggest wins of the year, as the 11-2-1 Redbirds had been receiving votes in Soccerbuzz's Great Lakes Regional rankings. KRISTA KEEPS ON GOING: Krista Rott kept up her offensive attack, scoring a pair of goals in Butler's 3-0 win over in-state rival Valparaiso on Sunday. Freshman Maura Murphy also tallied a goal against the Crusaders, off of a Kristen Aaltonen assist, giving her two on the season. Rott's first goal came off a penalty kick at 4:17, while Meredith Buemi assisted her on the second score at the 58-minute mark. LEAGUE HONORS: For her efforts on the field over the weekend, Krista Rott was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 21. She joins teammates Amy Morrison and Amy Pike on the list of Butler Player of the Week recipients. Rott is in the Top Five in the league in points (19), points per game (1.00), goals (9) and goals-per-game (0.50). MOVING ON UP: Krista Rott's barrage of goals on the weekend gives her nine on the season, which moves her into an eighth-place tie all-time with teammate Martha Gudiel as they each have 18 career goals. Rott also has 19 points on the season, giving her 47 in her three-year career, which also moves the forward into eighth place on Butler's career list. SANDERS SAVES THE DAY: Sophomore Katie Sanders collected six total saves on the weekend giving her 25 on the season. Sanders, who has filled in for regular starting keeper Amber Stauch for the last six matches, holds a 0.56 goals against average and has recorded three shutouts on the season. ALMOST THERE: Amy Morrison's assist against Illinois State gave her 108 career points, just two points shy of breaking the school's all-time record held by Joy Aschenbrener (1995-98). Morrison also needs just three goals to surpass Aschenbrener's career mark of 44 for the all-time lead. WINNING WAYS: The Bulldogs need just one more win to tie the school's record for wins in a single season. Butler went 13-7 last season, setting a new school record. Butler has at least three more matches remaining, with two regular-season contests, and at least one in the Horizon League Tournament. |
