Butler Looks to Improve 1-0-1 League Record in Two-game Weekend

Oct. 4, 2006

The Butler women's soccer team will play a pair of Horizon League matches this weekend, hosting Wright State Friday (Oct. 6) at 4:30 p.m., and then traveling to Detroit for a Sunday (Oct. 8) match.

The Bulldogs take a 4-5-2 overall record (1-0-1 in Horizon League play) into the weekend, and currently stand third in the League standings behind Loyola and UW-Green Bay.

Heading into the weekend, sophomore Angie Muir leads the team in points with 13. The second-year midfielder has tallied her points on six goals and one assist. She also leads the team in shots with 41, and shots on goal with 22. Muir ranks in the top ten in nearly every Horizon League offensive catagory.

Just behind Muir in point total is senior Marianne Schilling, who has a total of 10 points thus far on the year on five goals.  Schilling jumped up in the points rankings with a hat trick of goals against Cleveland State last Sunday.

Junior Kirby Zwickel has played almost 1,000 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs so far this season. The goalkeeper has registered 50 saves in those minutes, and currently holds a record of 4-5-2 as Butler's primary netminder.

Butler's current head coach, Tari St. John, is in her first year at the helm of the squad, after serving as an assistant under the Bulldogs' previous coach, Woody Sherwood.

The Bulldogs opened their Horizon League schedule last weekend fighting Loyola to a 2-2 tie after a tough 110 minutes of soccer. Muir and Carrie Twyman provided the Butler offense, with both scores coming in the first 28 minutes of the game. All four of the game's goals came in the first half of play, but neither team could dent the net for the game winnner.

The team took its first League win of the 2006 season with a convincing 7-1 victory over Cleveland State at the Butler Bowl.  The win was highlighted by Schilling's hat trick of goals, while Muir, Abbie Kaul, Twyman and Molly Callon each added single goals to the Butler total.

Stepping out of Horizon League play for a day, the Bulldogs battled to their second double-overtime tie in five days with cross-town foe IUPUI. After another 110 minutes of play, Butler and the Jaguars ended the match with a 1-1 tie. Schilling scored the lone Bulldog goal of the contest.

The weekend of conference play will find Butler both at home and on the road. Friday's match will be played in Indianapolis at the Bulldogs' own Varsity Field, while Sunday's match will be on the road in Detroit.
