Friday Trip to Indiana State Begins Hoosier Road Swing
Sept. 8, 2005 HOOSIER TRAVELS: Fresh off a 2-0 homestand, Butler returns to the road for a three-game road swing, beginning Friday afternoon in Terre Haute against Indiana State. The 4 p.m. match against the Sycamores is the first of three straight matches against in-state foes. Butler enters the match with a record of 2-2, while ISU stands at 1-3 on the young season. MUIR WHERE THAT CAME FROM: Freshman Angie Muir picked up the first individual honor of her Butler career, earning Horizon League "Player of the Week" accolades for the week of Sept. 5. As if that wasn't enough, Muir was also named to the 17-member Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week. Muir led the Bulldogs to a pair of wins over the weekend, posting three goals and two assists in the Bulldogs' 2-0 week. The Carmel, Ind., product had a goal and an assist in the team's 3-2 win over Xavier Friday, before doing one better Saturday with two goals and an assist in Butler's 3-0 win over Eastern Kentucky. Muir also fired 11 shots on the weekend. Muir leads the Bulldogs with 10 points on the season and has either scored or assisted on seven of the team's eight 2005 goals. A LOOK AT ISU: The Sycamores enter Friday's contest with a 1-3 mark for the 2005 season. Indiana State dropped road matches at Horizon League foe Wisconsin-Green Bay and Valparaiso last weekend. The Sycamores have scored three goals on the season, while allowing nine. Butler owns a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with ISU, including a 1-0 win in Indianapolis Sept. 5, 2004. INJURY BUG: Coach Woody Sherwood and the Bulldogs have already faced their share of adversity this season. 2004 "All-Newcomer Team" selection Molly Callon and freshman Lauren Haffner will both miss the 2005 season due to knee injuries sustained in the last month. Sarah Pavlik is not fully recovered from a knee injury suffered in the 2004 regular season opener, but is expected to return sometime in 2005. However, the news is improving. Senior captain Kate Lord made her 2005 debut last weekend in the Butler midfield, while senior Meredith Buemi and freshman Tierney Lanich are expected to return to action Friday after missing the last three matches after being injured against Louisville in the season opener.
LAST LINE OF DEFENSE: Sophomore Annalise Larkin watched teammates Kirby Zwickel and Megan Cappa start the first two games of the season, respectively, in goal for Butler. Last weekend, Larkin got her chance and performed well. Larkin picked up a pair of wins, including the first solo shutout of her Butler career Saturday against Eastern Kentucky. On the season, Larkin leads the Bulldogs in goals allowed average (1.00), saves (15) and save percentage (.882). PRESEASON RESPECT: Horizon League coaches tabbed Butler to finish third in the upcoming women's soccer season, the League office announced last week. Selecting Butler to one of the top three spots was a safe pick for the league's coaches as the Bulldogs have finished at least third in the league standings in every season since 1994. UW-Milwaukee received 47 points in a poll voted on by the League's eight head coaches. The Panthers received five of a possible seven-first place votes. Detroit clinched second place with 45 points and three-first place votes. Butler followed with 35 points. THE COACH: Using a laidback demeanor off the field and a fierce competitiveness on it, head coach Woody Sherwood continues to keep the Bulldogs among the Horizon League elite. The 2005 campaign is the seventh for Sherwood at Butler, where his Bulldogs have posted a 57-56-8 record, including an impressive 23-11-1 mark in Horizon League play. In eight seasons as a head coach, Sherwood's teams own a 79-73-10 (.519) mark. UP NEXT: The Bulldogs continue the trek through the Hoosier state, facing Purdue (Sept. 13) and Indiana (Sept. 16) in road contests. The next home match for the Bulldogs is Sunday, Sept. 18 when Dayton travels to Varsity Field. QUICK SHOTS: Freshman Jenny Southard was credited with the game-winner in Saturday's 3-0 win over Eastern Kentucky. Southard scored less than four minutes into the match...Thirteen of the 16 field players to see action for Butler this season have fired at least one shot...Butler and its opponents have each attempted 54 shots and committed 48 fouls. |
