Weekly Notes: Butler Women's Soccer

Sept. 3, 2002

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Butler women's soccer team will continue its stint on the road by traveling to Champaign, Ill. on Friday (Sept. 6) to take on Illinois in a 7 p.m. meeting. The No. 23 ranked Fighting Illini (0-2) will be looking for their first win on Friday, as they lost a pair of close games last weekend at the Nike Tiger Invitational. Illinois fell to Missouri, 2-1 in double overtime in the tournament's first round, before dropping a 1-0 decision to Kentucky on Sunday. Illinois, which was ranked ninth in the Great Lakes region according to Soccer Buzz Magazine , posted a 12-8-1 overall record last season, and went 6-3-1 in the Big Ten. This will be Butler's (2-0) first ever meeting against Illinois.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Bulldogs will host Western Michigan in their first home match of the season on Sunday (Sept. 8) at noon at Varsity Fields. The Broncos stand at 2-0 on the season, with wins over Northern Arizona (1-0) and Loyola (2-1 OT). WMU was 8-11 overall last season, and finished with a 6-6 mark in the Mid-American Conference. This will be the first time that Western Michigan and Butler have met in women's soccer action.

OUT OF THE BLOCKS: The Bulldogs are off to another strong start this season, by going 2-0 in their first week of action. Butler defeated Ball State 2-1 on Friday (Aug. 30) before escaping with a 1-0 double overtime victory against Xavier on Sunday (Sept. 1). Butler also began the 2001 campaign with a 2-0 mark and then went on to win three of their next four games giving them a program-best 5-1 start to the season.

GETTING IT DONE: Senior Amy Morrison scored all three goals over the weekend for the Bulldogs, helping the Bulldogs garner their perfect start. Morrison recorded a pair of goals against Ball State and then scored her third goal of the weekend off of a Meredith Buemi assist to lift Butler to a 1-0 double overtime triumph over the Musketeers.

GOING THE DISTANCE: Junior Amber Stauch went the distance for the Bulldogs in the goal this weekend, getting credit for both of the wins. Stauch recorded three saves against Ball State, while giving up just one goal and collected seven saves in her shutout victory over Xavier. The shutout marked the eighth of her career, which moves her into fourth place all-time.

LEAGUE HONORS: Amy Morrison earned Horizon League Player of the Week honors for her efforts on the field over the weekend. This is the third time in her career that Morrison has been awarded such honors.

ASSISTING THE TEAM: In addition to Meredith Buemi's assist to Amy Morrison for the game-winning goal against Xavier, both of Butler's other goals over the weekend were also assisted. Junior Annie Doerr's header off a corner kick at 6:29 against the Cardinals gave Butler a 1-0 lead and then senior Kristen Drogell's pass from the middle to Morrison just six minutes later would give the Bulldogs a two-goal advantage. The assist was the eighth of Doerr's career, while it registered as Drogell's seventh.

A FRESH START: Three true freshmen found themselves in the starting lineup during last weekend's matches. Kate Lord was among the starters against Ball State, while Maura Murphy and Meredith Buemi appeared in the starting lineup during both matches. Rookie Carrie Colglazier made her collegiate debut, coming in off the bench against the Musketeers.
