Women's Soccer Weekly Notes: September 2

Sept. 2, 2003

DEFENSIVE APPROACH: Butler has yet to allow a goal in its two regular season matches. Katie Sanders and Megan Cappa have split time in net for the Bulldogs. Sanders has registered four saves in just more than 112 minutes, while Cappa has collected three saves in approximately 87 minutes of work.

SHOOTING SPREE: After outshooting Ball State 16-5 Friday, Louisville fired 18 shots to Butler's seven Sunday. The good news for the Bulldogs were that the defense has not allowed many clean looks at the goal. Only two of Ball State's five shots and five of Louisville's 18 shots have been on goal.

LET'S JUST END IT NOW: In the 86th minute of Friday's in-state match-up against Ball State, Meredith Buemi took a backheel pass from senior Krista Rott and fired a shot that found the inside left corner of the goal. The more than 200 in attendance were most appreciative as rain fell for the last 15 minutes of the match. The sophomore midfielder also registered Butler's lone goal in the team's exhibition loss to Purdue. Not only were 90 minutes not enough to decide Sunday's match with Louisville, but 110 weren't either as no one scored in two 10-minute overtime periods.

SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL: Butler heads to the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland for neutral site matches against Drexel (Friday, 4 p.m.) and Towson (Sunday, noon). One of the opponents should be fairly familiar to coach Woody Sherwood. He spent the 1997 and 1998 seasons leading the Towson program before coming to Indianapolis.

BE READY OVER THERE: Sherwood has used 16 and 18 players, respectively, in the Bulldogs two matches, including two goalkeepers for extended periods. Only time will tell if this is an audition period for many of the younger players on the roster or if Sherwood will continue to use most of his bench in Horizon League play.

HOMECOMING (OF SORTS): The Bulldogs return to Indianapolis to play in-state rival Indiana Sept. 12. However, instead of Varsity Field, the match will take place under the lights at Lawrence Park. The match begins at 7 p.m.
