Butler Women's Soccer Kicks Off Campaign With a Pair of Weekend Matches
Aug. 30, 2002 KICKING OFF THE SEASON: The Butler women's soccer team will kick off the 2002 campaign on the road this weekend. The Bulldogs will travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State on Friday (Aug. 30) at 4 p.m. and will make the trek to Cincinnati, Ohio on Sunday (Sept. 1) to battle it out against Xavier at 1 p.m. This will be the Bulldogs first meeting against the Cardinals, while the Musketeers hold a 4-1-1 all-time series lead over Butler. A STRONG START: Junior Amy Pike scored a goal and added an assist to help Butler defeat Louisville, 3-0, in a preseason scrimmage match at Varsity Field on Saturday, Aug. 24. Freshmen Meredith Buemi and Maura Murphy tallied Butler's other two goals, while goalkeepers Amber Stauch and Katie Sanders split time in the goal to give the Bulldogs the shutout victory. BOOK WORM: Senior Amy Morrison returns as one of Butler's top players. The forward from Dallas, Texas left her mark in the record books last season, moving into fourth place all-time in career goals (27), points (72) and assists (19). She also set the school record for assists (14) and points (38) in a single season. ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY: Butler will perhaps be strongest at the forward position, but one of its top players, Martha Gudiel, will be nursing an ankle injury for the next four-to-five weeks. The 5-2 senior, who ranked second on the team last season in goals scored (10) and points (26), is expected to be back in full force by the beginning of Horizon League action WHAT'S ON THE HORIZON: The Bulldogs were selected to finish second in the annual league preseason coaches' poll, behind 2001 regular season and tournament champion, UW-Milwaukee. LEAGUE HONORS: The Butler women's soccer team placed six of its players on the 2001 All-League teams. Defender Hadiatu Dumbuya and forward Amy Morrison both received first team honors, and teammates Martha Guidel, Susannah Hoppe, Krista Rott and Amber Stauch were all cited to the second team. SMART ONES: For their efforts both on and off the field, Amy Morrison and Kristen Drogell were named to the Verison Academic All-District V team following the conclusion of the 2001 season. A TOUGH WAY TO END: The Butler women's soccer team's season ended in heartbreaking fashion on Nov. 12, as the Bulldogs fell 1-0 in triple overtime to UW-Milwaukee in the Horizon League Championship at Detroit's Titan Field. A SEASON TO REMEMBER: Despite losing in a hard-fought match to the Panthers in the League Tournament, head coach Woody Sherwood's Bulldogs had reason to hold their heads high. Butler's 13 wins (against seven losses) set a new school record, surpassing the 12 wins set during the 1996 and 1997 campaigns. |
