Women's Soccer Weekly Notes: August 25, 2003

Aug. 25, 2003

KICKING IT OFF: Butler opens the 2003 regular season slate Friday at home against Ball State. The match begins at 4 p.m. at Varsity Field on the Butler campus. The Bulldogs won the only previous match between the two schools, a 2-1 decision in Muncie to open the 2002 campaign.

The match will feature a tribute to fallen teammate Carrie Colglazier, who was tragically killed in June in an automobile accident. Colglazier had just completed her freshman year at Butler, playing in 13 matches for the 2002 Bulldogs.

EARLY STUMBLE: The Bulldogs fell to Purdue 4-1 Friday (Aug. 22) in an exhibition match at the IPFW Soccer Showcase. The Boilermakers, ranked No. 25 in the NSCAA/adidas Preseason Poll, tallied the first four goals of the game. Butler sophomore midfielder Meredith Buemi prevented the shutout with a goal in the 90th minute.

Twenty-two Bulldogs saw action in the match, including all three of the Butler netminders. The trio combined for seven saves. Katie Sanders, who started and played the entire first half, was responsible for five of those saves, while giving up two goals.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS: Butler placed second in the 2003 Horizon League preseason poll. The coaches ranked UW-Milwaukee as the unanimous frontrunner. The Panthers have gone unbeaten in League play the past three years, while capturing the last two League championships. The Bulldogs lost to UW-Milwaukee 4-2 in the 2002 Horizon League championship match.

Butler's 30 points in the preseason poll were six shy of UW-Milwaukee's total. The Bulldogs were followed by Detroit (23), Loyola (22), Wright State (19), UW-Green Bay (11) and Youngstown State (6).

BANNER YEAR: The runner-up finish in the Horizon League was not the only highlight of the 2002 season. Woody Sherwood's Bulldogs set a team record with 15 wins, eclipsing the old record of 13 set in 2001. Butler also swept the Horizon League postseason awards as Amy Morrison was named "Player of the Year," Kate Lord was the League's "Newcomer of the Year," and Sherwood landed "Coach of the Year."

The Bulldogs placed Morrison, Lord and defender Annie Doerr on the All-Horizon League first team, while Buemi, Hadiatu Dumbuya and Krista Rott were named to the second team.

MISSING PIECES: The Bulldogs lost six seniors in Morrison, Dumbuya, Martha Gudiel, Sarah Schmidt, Clayr Mimikos and Kristen Drogell. During their four-year careers, Butler compiled a 40-35-4 record.

However, the Bulldogs return seven starters and 16 letterwinners from the 2002 squad. Rott, Amy Pike, and Buemi are the leading returning scorers with 25, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
