Bulldogs Open Season Friday at Home Against Louisville
Aug. 24, 2004 Butler's women's soccer team opens the 2004 season Friday, Aug. 27, with a 4 p.m. match against the Cardinals of Louisville at Varsity Field. Coach Woody Sherwood's team returns eight starters and 18 total letterwinners from last season, including "All-Horizon League" selections Kate Lord and Meredith Buemi. In the second game of the 2003 season, the Bulldogs and Cardinals battled through 110 minutes of play before ending in a scoreless draw. The game was part of a frantic opening series for the Bulldogs, as they opened the season with a 3-0-1 mark. In addition to Buemi, who led the Butler returnees with seven goals and 18 points in 2003, the Bulldogs also welcome the return of league "All-Newcomer Team" selections Caitlin Gill and Kristin Harnest.
Sophomore Marcie Stucky moves to the defense, hoping to fill the shoes of "Co-Horizon League Player of the Year" Annie Doerr, who the Bulldogs lost to graduation. Sherwood and new assistant Tari St. John also brought in six freshmen this season and as many as three of them could be in the starting lineup Friday. The roster includes four seniors in Rachel Pivarnik, Katie Sanders, Kristen Aaltonen and Deirdre Connor. After Friday's opener, the Bulldogs travel to Cincinnati for a Sunday afternoon match against the Xavier Musketeers. Butler then begins a three-match homestand that will see Ball State (Sept. 2), Indiana State (Sept. 5) and Kent State (Sept. 12) come to Indianapolis. The first 100 students to Friday's match will get a free Nike Butler soccer t-shirt with a Butler student ID. Students get into all Butler athletic events at no charge, while ticket prices for the 2004 season are $5 for adults and $3 for youth. The Bulldogs have 11 home matches in 2004 and will host the 2004 Horizon League Championships Nov. 4-7. |
