Bulldogs Blank Louisville, 3-0, In Scrimmage Match
Aug. 24, 2002 Goalkeepers Amber Stauch and Katie Sanders combined for a shutout and Butler showed ample offensive punch while beating visiting Louisville, 3-0, in a women's soccer scrimmage match at Varsity Field on Saturday, August 24. The practice match was Butler's first test this season against outside competition. Freshman Maura Murphy broke a scoreless tie just over 21 minutes into the game with a header into the right corner of the net after Louisville goalkeeper Meredith Miller deflected a shot by Butler's Amy Morrison. It was the first collegiate shot attempt for Murphy and gave Butler a 1-0 halftime lead. The Bulldogs, who fired 17 shots at Louisville's goalkeepers in the match, added two more goals in the second half. Freshman Meredith Buemi lofted a shot into the goal from in front of the net, with teammates Amy Pike and Krista Rott picking up assists. Pike then closed the scoring from the top of the box after taking a long pass from freshman Katie Lord. Stauch did not face a Louisville shot in the first half, while Sanders had three saves in the second half. Butler's defense also picked up one team save. |
