Bulldogs Look Impressive at the Indiana Indoor Tournament
Feb. 28, 2006 Butler opened its spring slate with a pair of impressive outings Saturday at the Indiana Indoor Tournament at Mellencamp Pavilion on the campus of Indiana University. The Bulldogs used two late goals to secure a 2-2 draw against the Cleveland Cobras club team before Kentucky downed Butler, 2-1, in the waning minutes of the second match of the day. "For coming out and playing for the first time in four months, I thought we had a very successful day," said Butler coach Woody Sherwood. "We played with just a few subs because we're still battling injuries, but we did some encouraging things that should lead to success both later in the spring and next fall." Playing on a smaller field at the Pavilion, Butler chose to play a man-down against the Cobras in the opening match of the day. With eight minutes to play in the match, Butler used a full 11-man squad for the first time on the day and responded with two quick goals from freshman Lauren Haffner. Injury forced Haffner to miss the fall season, but her scoring ability will be welcomed during the 2006 campaign. It was Butler who found the back of the net first against Kentucky with 19 minutes left, as a ball served in from a direct kick found the head of junior Kristin Harnest, who scored for a 1-0 lead. The Cats responded five minutes later with a goal and then scored the game-winner with six minutes left. The Bulldogs return to action March 25, hosting IUPUI, Southern Indiana and Miami (Ohio) at the Butler Bowl. Butler's first match is set for 11:15 a.m. against the cross-town Jaguars.
