Bulldogs Advance Past Wright State In League Champs With 4-3 Shoot-Out Thriller

Oct. 28, 2006

Box Score

Dayton, Ohio - Butler goalkeeper Kirby Zwickel made nine saves in regulation before making a pair of crucial stops on penalty kicks to help give the Bulldogs a 4-3 shoot-out win against host Wright State in the Horizon League Championship opening round on Saturday (Oct. 28). Jenny Southard and Carrie Twyman each netted a goal to force a 2-2 tie in regulation, while the Butler defense broke up 31 Raider shots to force tie-breaking penalty kicks where the Bulldogs came away victorious.

No. 6 seed Butler got things going early in the game, as Southard netted the first score of the match in the second minute, deflecting a pass from Angie Muir past the goalie and into the far corner.

The Bulldogs would maintain the 1-0 advantage until the second stanza, when No. 3 seed WSU would knot the game on a score by Jodie Shoaf in the 53rd minute before taking a 2-1 lead just over five minutes later.

The lead would last barely over a minute, however, as Muir found Twyman in stride, who took the ball one-on-one with the keeper before netting the tying-point.

The contest would remain deadlocked throughout the final minutes of regulation and through the two extra periods to force a shoot-out period with penalty kicks. After the two teams traded three successive makes, Zwickel stopped the Raider's fourth attempt to give the Bulldogs the advantage. A make by Lauren Haffner in Butler's fourth try produced a must-make shot for Wright State in their fifth PK, which Zwickel stopped to give Butler the win.

Kristin Harnest, Muir and Abbie Kaul each netted their penalty kicks before Haffner's eventual winner.

The Raiders peppered the Butler goal with 31 shots, including seven in the extra periods, but the Bulldog defense stifled just about every scoring chance.

Butler moves on to face the winner of Sunday's (Oct. 29) contest between No. 2 Loyola and No. 7 Youngstown State on Friday, Nov. 3 at the site of the higher remaining seed.
