Bulldogs Play to Draw in Horizon League Opener

Sept. 29, 2006

Box Score

In their Horizon League opener, the Bulldogs and the Loyola Ramblers played through 120 minutes of soccer, ending in a 2-2 tie. With the tie, Butler levels its record at 3-5-1 on the 2006 season, 0-0-1 in Horizon League play.

"We played well; we were two defensive set pieces away from playing great," Butler Coach Tari St. John said. "They scored on a quick restart and a corner, we need to be better with those.Besides that, I was pleased with our defensive organization. Loyala has some really strong offensive threats but our back four and Kirby did not give up a goal in the run of play."

The Bulldogs struck first in the match, when Angie Muir found the back of the net in the eighth minute of play. Muir's score came on an assist from Jenny Southard, and was taken from about 15 yards out.

"Offensively, this was one of our best games of the year," St. John said. "It needs to be noted that almost all of our offensive opportunities, including our goals, resulted from great defensive pressure in our offensive half. Angie Muir, despite having a goal and an assist on the game, had an even greater impact on the game defensively today."

Butler scored its second goal about 20 minutes later when Carrie Twyman took a cross from Muir and sent it past the Loyola goal keeper from about two yards.

"I was also pleased with the play of Carrie Twyman," St. John said. "She gave us a great boost off the bench. Hardwork is valued on this team; Carrie didn't take a minute off in the time that she played."

Loyola got on the board in the 33rd minute of the match, with Amy Lomas scoring from six yards off of a ball from Mary Dale and Jackie Vera. The Ramblers tied the game 2-2 with a goal at the 43:38 mark from Casey Berrier, who scored on a header in front of the goal off of a corner kick by Lindsay Faron.

The 2-2 tie would stand for the final 46 minutes of regulation, and through two 10-minute overtimes. Loyola edged the Bulldogs in shots, 21-13, as well as corner kicks, 5-3.

Junior Kirby Zwickel started between the posts for Butler once again, registering seven saves in her 120 total minutes of work.

The Bulldogs will continue Horizon League play Sunday, hosting Cleveland State. The noon match will be played at the Butler Bowl.
