Butler Falls To Milwaukee, 5-1, In League-Opener

Erin Kreuser scored a goal and added two assists to lead visiting Milwaukee to a 5-1 victory over Butler in the Horizon League opener for both teams at Varsity Field on Friday, Sept. 28. The win lifted Milwaukee to 5-3-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-6-1. The visitors jumped in front on Kreuser's goal just six minutes into the match. The Milwaukee forward took a pass from Nicole Sperl on the right side of the net and fired a shot past Butler goalkeeper Annalise Larkin from 12 yards out. It was Kreuser's second goal of the season. Sperl and Kreuser reversed roles 15 minutes later, with Kreuser serving a pass that Sperl headed into the goal to give Milwaukee a 2-0 advantage. That score stood at halftime. The Panthers stretched the lead to 3-0 on a penalty kick by Joanna Severson at 75:24. The Bulldogs ended Milwaukee's shutout bid three minutes later on a penalty kick by Angie Muir. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The Panthers added two more goals in the final ten minutes for the final tally. Butler had just one shot in the first half and seven for the match. The Bulldogs appeared poised for a goal ten minutes into the second half when Muir blasted a shot from 18 yards out, but it hit the cross bar. Abbie Kaul was in position to take the rebound, and she attempted a point-blank header that was stopped by Milwaukee goalkeeper Erin Kane. The Milwaukee goalkeeper, who recorded her fifth win of the season, also stopped an open shot by Lindsey Fox with 20 minutes left in the contest. There is not a member of our team that does not want to see this team again in the conference tournament," head coach Tari St. John said following the match. "In fact, I think we would have been up for playing them tomorrow.
"This was a very strange 5-1 loss. We matched up pretty well against them, but the difference was that Milwaukee executed when it had opportunities in around the goal and we did not." Larkin started in goal for the Bulldogs and played 78:09. She had two saves, while allowing three goals. Jessica Schein played the final 11:51 in goal and posted one save. The Bulldogs will continue with Horizon League play with a match at Valparaiso on Sunday, Sept. 30. That contest is slated for 3 p.m. (ET). |
