Butler Upsets Dayton, 1-0

Sept. 18, 2005

Box Score

Senior Meredith Buemi shrugged off any semblance of superstition and turned her 13th career goal into a 1-0 Butler upset of visiting Dayton in a women's soccer match at Butler's Varsity Field on Sunday, Sept. 18. The victory lifted the Bulldogs to 4-4 on the season, while Dayton fell to 4-2-2.

Butler stunned the visiting Flyers, ranked 32nd nationally and sixth in the Great Lakes Region by Soccer Buzz, less than 10 minutes into the first half. Buemi took a pass from freshman Angie Muir and beat a Dayton defender up the left side of the field. When Dayton goalkeeper Niki Reed came out for the stop, Buemi fired a shot into the right corner of the open net at 8:28. It was her first goal this season!

From that point, Butler's defense took over, stopping repeated attacks by the Flyers. Sophomore goalkeeper Annalise Larkin had one save in the first half and three in the final period, while recording her fourth victory in six decisions.

"We knew we were going to have to weather a significant attack," said Butler head coach Woody Sherwood after the match. "Dayton is a great team, and they've played well against some very strong competition. Collectively, our backs did a great job. It's a tremendous achievement to shutout a team like the Flyers."

Sherwood received a solid performance from his bench in the contest, with senior Kathleen Coyle, juniors Megan Callon, Marianne Schilling and Caitlin Gill and freshman Lyndsey Olsen each logging significant minutes in the match. The five started the second half and helped the Bulldogs keep a fresh team on the field at the end of the contest.

"We wanted (Dayton) to work as hard as they could, and it was important for us to have fresh players in the game. This was a great team win," added Sherwood.

Dayton was unbeaten in its last six matches, including ties against #5 Virginia and #25 William and Mary. The Bulldogs were coming off back-to-back 2-1 losses to Purdue and Indiana.

The Bulldogs will take their longest trip of the season next weekend when they travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, for a pair of matches. Butler will face Hawaii on Friday, Sept. 23, and Robert Morris on Saturday, Sept. 24.
