Butler Rallies At Regionally-Ranked Ball State For 2-1 Win

Muncie, Ind. - Juniors Angie Muir and Jenny Southard scored a pair of unanswered goals less than four minutes apart early in the second stanza as the Bulldogs rallied past in-state rival Ball State for their first win of the season on Sunday (Sept. 2) afternoon. The Bulldogs move to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Cardinals, who were ranked 13th in the Great Lakes Region, fall to even at 1-1-0. All of the day's scoring happened within an eight-minute span, coming just minutes into the second period. The Cardinals struck first, as Emily Rein scored on a breakaway off a header from Megan Ridley late in the 51st minute. It didn't take long for the Bulldogs to answer, however, as Muir drilled a 20-yard shot to the back of the net off a free kick to knot the scoring in the 54th minute. Butler would be at it again moments later, as Southard corralled a pass from senior Laura Miller and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper before burying the go-ahead tally in the 58th minute of play. "Friday's game [at Ohio State] was a physically and emotionally exhausting game," head coach Tari St. John said, "so I wasn't sure what to expect during today's game. What I saw was not great soccer but pure determination to win a game. "Muir's goal gave our team some much needed confidence, and we began to believe that we could win this game and started playing accordingly." The Bulldogs were without the services of regular midfielders Lindsey Fox and Alex Shaffer, who were both sidelined with injuries, which required some shuffling by the Butler mentor.
"Laura Miller is a natural defender, but due to injuries we asked her to play in the center-mid for us," St. John stated. "She embraced the task and battled every minute she played and came out with our first assist of the season." The Bulldogs return to action against another regionally-ranked Cardinals team on Sept. 9 when they square-off with Louisville (ranked No. 5 in the Great Lakes Region) at 1:00 p.m. |
