Buckeyes Trip-Up Bulldogs In Regular Season Opener

Aug. 31, 2007

Box Score

Columbus, Ohio - The Butler women's soccer team put up a valiant effort against host Ohio State in its regular season opener on Friday (Aug. 31), but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities as the Buckeyes claimed a 3-0 decision at Jesse Owens Field.

Butler's backfield, including second-year players Morgan Cox and Abbie Kaul and rookies Cara Burchett and Sarah Phelps, clamped down on the defensive end throughout the match, holding the Buckeyes to just seven shots on net. Ohio State, however, broke up several Bulldog scoring opportunities in the box and held them to just a pair of shots on goal in the match.

"As a coach, when you respond to a game like this, you need to take out your emotion over the result," head coach Tari St. John said. "It was a frustrating loss, but I am not frustrated with our team's performance.

"Anytime you stick to a game plan that produces five or six one-on-one opportunities with the keeper you've done some things right as a team. The way we played today has given us even more confidence going into our next match."

Butler returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 2) when they take on Ball State beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Muncie, Ind.
