Butler Drops Exhibition Match to Boilermakers

Aug. 23, 2003

Fort Wayne, Ind. - The Butler women's soccer team opened their season Friday at the IPFW Soccer Showcase, dropping a 4-1 decision in exhibition play to Purdue. Sophomore midfielder Meredith Buemi prevented the shutout with a goal in the 90th minute of play.

The Westerville, Ohio product sent a shot just inside the left post, sneaking past Purdue junior goalkeeper Maureen Carey. The tally was unassisted. Buemi was named to the All-Horizon League second team and All-Newcomer teams last season. Her ten points during the 2002 campaign led all Horizon League rookies.

Purdue got goals from from seniors Emily Whetter, Annette Kent and Courtney Coppedge, and from junior Lori Arnold. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Mason blanked the Bulldogs through the first half with three saves. The Boilermakers put 11 shots on goal compared to Butler's seven. Buemi put four of the team's seven shots on goal.

Coach Woody Sherwood used the exhibition match as an opportunity to see almost all of his roster perform in game action. Twenty-two Bulldogs saw action, including all three of the Butler netminders. The trio combined for seven saves. Katie Sanders, who started and played the entire first half, was responsible for five of those saves, while giving up two goals.

The Bulldogs open the regular season Friday with a home match against Ball State. The match is scheduled for 4:00 at Varsity Field on the Butler campus and will feature a tribute to Carrie Colglaizer, who was tragically killed in June in an automobile accident. Colglazier had just completed her freshman year at Butler, playing in 13 matches for the 2002 Bulldogs.
