Wright State Upends Butler, 63-55
Feb. 20, 2003 FAIRBORN, OHIO - Wright State outscored Butler 38-25 in the second half en route to claiming a 63-55 win over the Bulldogs on Thursday evening at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 5-19 overall and 3-10 in Horizon League action. The Raiders improve to 10-14 and 7-6 in the league. Cortney Urquhart led Butler with 14 points, while Lisa Pryor added 11. Dionne Goodwin narrowly missed a double-double, with nine points and a season-high 11 rebounds off the bench. Urquhart's jumper at 14:36 gave Butler an early 8-4 lead. Despite not scoring another field goal for the next seven minutes, the Bulldogs still maintained a slim edge by connecting on eight of ten free throws over the same stretch, to take a 16-11 lead. Four straight points by Angie Ott, followed by a jumper from Kristin Krueger, lifted the Raiders to a 17-16 lead with 6:32 remaining in the half. Nikki Budgake's layin on the next possession gave Butler a one-point lead, but the Raiders managed to score the next two baskets to take their biggest lead of the half at 21-18. Lisa Pryor's back-to-back three-pointers then kick-started a 12-4 Butler run to end the half, as the Bulldogs headed into the locker room with a 30-25 advantage. Urquhart's layin of an inbounds play gave Butler its biggest lead of the game, 32-25, to begin the second period. But, Wright State would score the next three baskets, to climb back to within 32-31. Butler held on to its lead until 12:15 when Webb, who recorded 17 of her 23 points in the second half, scored off a Bulldog turnover giving Wright State a 39-38 edge. Webb's basket was part of a 10-0 Wright State run which eventually put the Raiders up 50-41. A Stephanie Boeke jumper narrowed the gap to 52-49 at 5:03, but Wright State answered with six straight points to pull ahead 58-49. Butler would get no closer than five throughout the remainder of the game. In addition to Webb's 23 points, Iesha Gray scored 12, all coming in the final 20 minutes of action. Butler held a 43-29 rebounding edge, but was plagued with turnovers, committing 25 on the game. The Bulldogs were just 18-of-52 (.346) from the field, but connected on a season-high 80 percent (16-20) of their attempts from the free throw line. The Raiders shot 43.9 percent (25-57) on the game. Butler will host Youngstown State in its final home outing of the season on Saturday (Feb. 22) at 2 p.m. |
