Hot Shooting Phoenix Roll Past Bulldogs, 89-53

GREEN BAY, Wisc. - UW-Green Bay used a big first half to roll past the Butler women's basketball team, 89-53, on Thursday (Jan. 7) at the Phoenix Sports Center. The Bulldogs, who are still in search of their first Horizon League win, fall to 1-22 overall and 0-12 in league action. The league-leading Phoenix (18-5) keep its perfect league record intact with a 12-0 mark. UW-Green Bay jumped out to 45-16 first half lead and never looked back. The Phoenix missed only three field goals in the first ten minutes of the contest, shooting 80 percent in that time period. The Phoenix, which led 48-23 at the half, were led in scoring by Mandy Stowe's 15 points. Stowe made her first six field goal attempts, and finished with a 7-for-9 performance from the field. Also scoring in double figures for UWGB were Amanda Leonard (14 points), who tallied her 1,000th career point early in the second period. Amy Fieck chipped in 10 points off the bench. UWGB shot 58.1 percent (36-62) on the game, including a blazing 70.0 percent in the first stanza. The Phoenix shot were 6-of-10 from long range, including 5-of-5 in the first half. The hosts outrebounded Butler 42-29 and forced the Bulldogs into 20 turnovers. The Bulldogs, who shot 33.3 percent (19-57) from the field, were paced by freshman Cortney Urquhart's 18 points, on 7-of-8 field goal shooting, tying a career high. Classmates Maria Marchesano and Angel Mason added nine and eight points, respectively. Butler will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 9 against Younstown State at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The tilt against the Penguins is scheduled to begin following the Butler/Cleveland State men's game which begins at noon. |
