INDIANAPOLIS -Tiffany Webb set a new school and Horizon League single game scoring record by scoring 49 points in Wright State's 82-65 win over Butler on Thursday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Wright State, which has won its last three games, improves to 5-10 overall and 3-2 in the league, while Butler drops to 3-11 and 1-3 in league action. Webb broke the league's nine-year-old record of 46 points, set by Xavier's Carol Madsen during the 1994 season. The sophomore guard's 49 points included a 17-of-20 performance from the free throw line. Her 17 tallies from the charity stripe were also a school record, and it ranks second all-time in the league. The two teams combined for 74 free throw attempts and 60 fouls on the game. "You have to give Tiffany a great deal of credit for her performance tonight," said head coach Beth Couture. "She dominated us both on the inside and out and we just let her beat us time and time again." Cortney Urquhart paced the Bulldogs with her third double-double of the season. She scored a career-high 20 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds. Angel Mason added 14 points and Nancy Bowden chipped in 12, due to a 10-of-11 performance from the charity stripe. Bowden also added six rebounds, six assists and five steals to her totals. The Bulldogs only led once in the game, 3-2, in the early minutes before Webb and the Raiders took control. Wright State went on an 9-0 run to pull ahead 14-5. A pair of Bowden free throws closed the gap to 22-19, but Webb would score 11 of her team's final 14 points over the next seven minutes, giving her team a 39-30 lead at halftime. Butler kept it close in the earlygoing of the second half, as a pair of free throws by Urquhart at 11:17 pulled the Bulldogs to within 49-45. But, two free throws by Iesha Gray, followed by a three-pointer from Webb gave the Raiders their first double-digit lead at 62-50 with 7:27 remaining. Wright State maintained its double-figure lead until Urquhart's layup at 1:35, brought the Bulldogs to within striking distance at 73-65 with 1:42 left to play. But, Angie Ott, who finished with 16 points, made four free throws down the stretch and Webb scored another five points in the game's final minute to seal the win for the Raiders. "We have got to find someway to get our team to execute and believe in our game plan," Couture added. "We are not going to win ballgames by playing as individuals and that's what we were trying to do tonight." Butler, which shot a dismal 37.7 from the field, outrebounded Wright State 40-34. The Raiders were 23-of-50 from the field (46 percent) on the game. The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at Youngstown State. The Penguins (3-11) are winless in league play with a 0-4 mark. |
