Butler Duo Falls In ITA Quarterfinals

Oct. 29, 2002

MADISON, WIS. - The Butler men's doubles team of Kevin and Brandon Gill made another impressive run through the doubles bracket of an elite tournament, but eventually fell in the quarterfinals of the ITA/Omni Hotels Midwest Regional on Monday. The Tournament was hosted by Wisconsin, and was comprised of top players from around the Midwest. The winners from each Region advanced to Dallas, Texas, where they will compete for the nation's top finish.

The Gill brothers, seeded fourth in the bracket, defeated teams from Xavier (8-3), Estern Illinois (8-3) and Illinois (8-3) before falling to Josh Axler and Thomas Schaechterle 9-8 (11-9 in the tiebreaker) in the quarterfinal match.

"We were up 3-0 in the tiebreaker, but Northwestern just wouldn't crack" said head coach Jason Suscha. "We played very well, and we didn't make many mistakes, but they didn't fall apart either. We didn't underestimate this team, though, we knew how talented they were. It is just a heartbreaking loss for us."

Brandon, who was named this week's Horizon League Player of the Week, and Kevin are now 11-4 in doubles action this season. The Bulldogs will return to action on Jan. 18 against Michigan State. Match time against the Spartens is slated for 10 a.m.
