Butler Duo Ranked #46 Nationally
Sept. 4, 2003 Kevin and Brandon Gill were ranked No. 46 nationally in a preseason poll released Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The ITA is the governing body for collegiate tennis and the rankings were determined by a vote of the ITA National Ranking Committee. The brothers from Park Tudor High School in Indianapolis were the only Horizon League players to be ranked in either singles or doubles. Kevin Gill, a senior, was named the Horizon League men's tennis "Player of the Year" last season, following a stellar 24-7 regular season at No. 1 singles and a 30-8 regular season at No. 1 doubles. This marked the fifth time in as many years that a Butler player had either shared or won the award outright, as former Bulldog Brandon Currie won from 1999-2002. Gill was named the Horizon League "Player of the Week" on a pair of occasions last season and went a perfect 5-0 in both singles and doubles action against league foes. Sophomore Brandon Gill was named to the All-Horizon League first team as a sophomore. The brothers were instrumental in helping the Bulldogs obtain their second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth last season by winning the Horizon League championship. The Bulldogs begin the season Sept. 20 with an alumni match before traveling to Muncie for the Ball State Invitational Sept. 26. Horizon League competition takes place in the spring. |
