Butler Tennis Teams Advance To League Championships

April 26, 2003

INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler men's and women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Horizon League Championships after defeating their league counterparts in the semifinals today (April 26) at North Central High School. Each team faced Wright State in the semifinals, as the men blanked the Raiders, 4-0, while the women walked away with the 4-2 win.

Both championship matches begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. The top-seeded men's team will face UW-Green Bay, which entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, while the women's team will face No. 1 UIC in the title bout. The pairings are identical to last season's championship matches, as the Butler men's team defeated the Phoenix 4-2 en route to their first ever NCAA berth, while the women's team lost to the Flames 4-0.

The Butler men's tennis team has appeared in the tournament finals for the last seven seasons and have captured the title in four of the past five years. UIC has been the lone hurdle in the Butler women's team's road to success, as the Flames have defeated the Bulldogs in the championship match for the past four seasons. UIC has won six straight league titles entering into tomorrow's match.
