Butler Leads the Horizon League with Three Postseason Honorees

April 22, 2005

Butler placed a league-high three players on the All-Horizon League teams, as sophomore James Low and junior Andy Bartish earned first-team honors, while junior newcomer Parker Ross was named to the second team. The trio was honored at the pre-championship banquet Friday (April 22) evening. The league's head coaches voted on the awards.

Butler's Jason Suscha was named Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. This season, he led the Bulldogs to a 13-12 record, including a 5-0 mark in League competition, as Butler will enter the championships as the top seed. The Bulldogs are in search of their fourth straight championship title, which would mark their seventh in eight years.

On the year, Low has a 20-12 mark in singles, all at the top position, and a 19-13 record in doubles, splitting time between No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. He is 4-1 in singles against Horizon League opponents and has yet to drop a doubles match in conference play. He is a two-time winner of the league's "Player of the Week." Low also earned postseason Horizon League honors in 2004.

Bartish has posted a 16-11 record at the No. 1 and 2 singles spots for the Bulldogs and an 18-14 mark in doubles so far this season. Bartish also earned the league's "Player of the Week" honor earlier this spring. Ross, in his first year at Butler after transferring from Iowa, is 14-17 overall in singles play, seeing action at the all three of the top spots for the Bulldogs. He has added a 16-13 record in doubles.

UIC junior Ivan Kovalev was named the league's "Player of the Year" after posting a 5-0 mark in league singles play at the No. 1 spot. Wright State freshman Lance Koetter earned Newcomer of the Year honors after posting a 10-10 (2-2 League) record at No. 2 singles in his first season of Horizon League play.

The 2005 Horizon League Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will be held this weekend (April 23-24) at North Central High School in Indianapolis. Butler, the top seed in the tournament, receives a bye into the semifinals and will play Saturday afternoon.
