Men's Tennis Team Escapes With 4-3 Win At Marquette
Feb. 14, 2003 MILWAUKEE - The Butler men's tennis team improved to .500 for the first time this season as a 4-3 victory over Marquette on Friday (Feb. 14) boosted the Bulldogs' record to 4-4 on the season. The Bulldogs captured the doubles point by sweeping the Golden Eagles in all three matches. The standout duo of Brandon and Kevin Gill defeated Raj Gill and Justin Holsen, 8-5, at the No. 1 position. Scott Newmark and Mike Weaver defeated Eigintas Vedrickas and Creighton Macey by the same score at the No. 3 spot and Andrew Bartish and Peter Voelz captured a 9-8 victory over Ian Kawas and Troy Delmege at No. 2 doubles. It took a tie-breaker (6-4, 6-7, 7-6) for Kevin Gill to defeat Raj Gill at No. 1 singles. Voelz defeated Delmege 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Bartish beat Kawas 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 position. Brandon Gill lost the No. 2 singles battle to Vedrickas, 6-4, 6-4. Marquette also captured victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions as Holsen defeated Weaver 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4 and Macy knocked off Newmark 7-6, 6-4 at No. 5 Butler will make the trek up north to take on UW-Green Bay in the teams' Horizon League opener on Saturday (Feb. 15). The Bulldogs defeated the Phoenix, 4-2, in the title bout of the Horizon League Championships last season en route to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. |
