Gill Leads Bulldogs at Purdue Invitational

Oct. 19, 2003

Kevin Gill posted three wins at No. 1 singles at the Purdue Invitational this weekend to lead the Butler attack. The senior did not drop a set in the three matches. Gill also teamed with his brother, Brandon, for two doubles matches. The tandem lost to Purdue's top team, but rebounded to knock off the top duo from Western Michigan.

Against Northwestern, Kevin Gill defeated Chuck Perrin 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, while Brandon Gill came back against Adam Schaechterle 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 position. Freshman Evan West also posted a singles win against the Wildcats.

Kevin Gill, James Low, Andy Bartish, West and Mike Weaver all posted singles wins against Toledo Saturday. All of the matches were in straight sets, except for Weaver's 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 win over Josh Moran that extended into Sunday's play.

Against Purdue in doubles Saturday, the Gills lost to Purdue's top team of Troy Havens and Paul Rose, 8-5. West and Weaver held off the Boilermakers at No. 3 doubles with an 8-6 win, but Bartish and Low lost a close match against Seth McKinley and Sounak Chatterjee at the No. 2 position.

In Sunday's singles matches against Western Michigan, Kevin Gill was the lone Bulldog to register a win, dropping Tommy Dennis 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1. Kevin and Brandon Gill combined to defeat Brady Crosby and Ravi Pathanjali, 9-8 (9-7), at the top doubles position. Bartish and Low teamed up for a similar 9-8 (7-4) win at No. 2.

Brandon Gill and Bartish rounded out Sunday's play with an 8-6 victory over Indiana's Dmytro Ishtuganov and Neil Kenner. Butler's two other doubles teams dropped matches against the Hoosiers.

The Purdue Invitational included Butler, Indiana, Northwestern, Toledo and Western Michigan, in addition to the host Boilermakers. The hidden-dual format allowed all teams to play three rounds of singles and doubles against different opponents.

The Bulldogs now travel to East Lansing, Mich. for the ITA Regionals Thursday. The women's team travels to Kalamazoo, Mich. Thursday for their regional competition.
