Butler To Host #6 Indiana On Senior Day
Oct. 23, 2006 Butler will close out its 2006 men's soccer regular season slate at home when it faces #6 Indiana on Tuesday, Oct. 24. The Bulldogs will pay tribute to seven senior members of the team prior to the non-league contest, which will be played at the Butler Bowl beginning at 4 p.m. Facing their final regular season match for the Bulldogs will be seniors John DeVae, Paul Mongillo, Frank Peabody, Matt Soldato, Aaron Thompson, Tom Turner and Tim Torretta. Mongillo, Peabody, Soldato, Thompson and Torretta each have been four-year members of the squad, while DeVae and Turner each have played two seasons. The Bulldogs have posted 40 wins and one Horizon League regular season title over the past four years. Peabody has been Butler's starting goalkeeper for two consecutive seasons, and he entered this year as Butler's all-time leader with a 0.87 career goals against average. He's recorded 10 shutouts in the past two seasons. Soldato and Thompson are four-year regulars on Butler's defensive line, while Mongillo joined the starting back line this year. DeVae earned all-league honors and finished as Butler's second-leading scorer last season, after transferring from UIC. Turner, a transfer from Drury, is currently Butler's third-leading scorer. Torretta had his playing career cut short by injuries, but he's remained a contributing member of the squad.
Indiana is the second nationally ranked team to visit the Butler Bowl this season. The Bulldogs upset #17 UIC, 1-0, on Oct. 15, behind DeVae's game-winning goal. Butler has won its last two matches, including a 3-1 decision over IUPUI on Oct. 18. The Bulldogs will begin play in the Horizon League Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 28. Butler, seeded sixth in the tournament, will visit #3 seeded UW-Milwaukee for a quarterfinal contest starting at 7 p.m. (CDT). |
