Butler Hosts League Foe UIC On Sunday, Sept. 22
Sept. 18, 2002 LEAGUE TEST: The Butler men's soccer team, coming off a stretch of three matches in five days, will play just one match in a 12-day period. But that match will be significant! The Bulldogs will host Horizon League foe UIC at Varsity Field on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. The Flames finished third in the conference regular season race a year ago and were ranked among the league's preseason favorites this year. The Bulldogs are looking for their first victory in September and their second win of the 2002 campaign. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Butler fell to 1-5-1 on the season with two losses and a tie in its last three matches. The Bulldogs dropped a 2-1 decision to Horizon League foe Cleveland State in two overtimes when the visiting Vikings converted a penalty kick three minutes into the second overtime period. It was the first Cleveland State victory over the Bulldogs in 12 attempts. Butler then fell in the opening round match in the 2002 Butler University Adam's Mark SoccerFest VII to Hartwick, 3-0, before closing the tournament with a 1-1 tie against Air Force in two overtimes SOCCERFEST VII: Nationally-ranked Indiana captured the team title at the 2002 Adam's Mark SoccerFest VII with victories over Air Force, 2-0, and Hartwick, 1-0. It was the fourth title in the past five Butler-hosted tournaments for the #9-ranked Hoosiers. Hartwick, which beat the Bulldogs in the opening round, finished second in the meet, while Air Force edged Butler for third place. Indiana's Pat Noonan was named the tournament's Offensive MVP, while Indiana goalkeeper Jay Nolly, who recorded back-to-back shutouts, was tabbed the meet's Defensive MVP. ALL-TOURNAMENT: Senior midfielder Thulio Goncalves and freshman defender John Mariscalco were named to the 11-player all-tournament team at the conclusion of the Adam's Mark SoccerFest VII. It was the second time in four years that Goncalves earned a spot on the Butler SoccerFest all-tournament team. He was named the Defensive MVP of the 2000 Butler tournament. Mariscalso, who has started all seven Butler matches this season, earned his first all-tournament recognition. BULLDOG BITS: Butler senior Nick Pantazi, who had the Bulldogs' lone goal against Cleveland State, has taken over sole possession of fourth place on Butler's all-time scoring list with 76 career points. He's one point ahead of teammate Michael Mariscalco, who picked up his 21st career assist in the Cleveland State match...Sophomore David Wyrick scored his first goal of the season in the closing minutes of Butler's match against Air Force to give the Bulldogs a 1-1 tie in the contest. Wyrick blasted a shot off the top crossbar from 25 yards out for the Bulldogs' only goal of the 2002 Adam's Mark SoccerFest VII...Junior goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt, a transfer from Indiana University, was given his second start of the season in Butler's match against Air Force, and he responded by allowing just one goal while recording seven saves...The Bulldogs had a season-high 26 shots in the match against Air Force, including seven in the two overtime periods. Earlier in the week, Butler had taken 24 shots in the 2-1 overtime loss to Cleveland State...Butler has played its last five matches without defender Tony Beer. The Butler senior, who started every match last season, is sidelined with an ankle injury.
