Bulldogs Begin Three-Match Homestand
Sept. 8, 2005 HOME OPENER: Butler's men's soccer team, fresh from a championship at the Bradley Holiday Inn City Center Classic, will play the first of three consecutive home matches when it faces non-league foe Valparaiso on Friday, Sept. 9. The home-opener is slated for 4 p.m. (EST) on Butler's Varsity Field. The Bulldogs will remain at Varsity Field for a 1 p.m. (EST) match against Cincinnati on Sunday, Sept. 11, before closing out the homestand against local foe IUPUI at Kuntz Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 13. That match will start at 7 p.m. PERFECT START: The Bulldogs opened the 2005 campaign with back-to-back shutout victories to capture the team crown at the Bradley Holiday Inn City Center Classic in Peoria, Ill., on Sept. 2-3. Butler defeated Western Illinois, 1-0, in the first match of the tournament, before claiming the title with a 1-0 win over Bradley. The host Braves finished second, DePaul came in third and Western Illinois placed fourth in the tournament. ALL-TOURNAMENT: Butler senior Scott Olsen was named the Most Valuable Player at the Bradley Holiday Inn City Center Classic following the tournament. Olsen sparked Butler to a pair of victories and recorded an assist on the Bulldogs' game-winning goal against Western Illinois. Joining Olsen on the all-tournament team were seniors John Mariscalco and Patrick Reilly and junior Aaron Thompson. Mariscalco had the game-winning goal in Butler's first match, while Reilly and Thompson led Butler's rock-solid defensive effort. Thompson had an assist on Butler's game-winning goal against Bradley. BULLDOG BITS: Senior goalkeeper Frank Peabody matched his career total for shutouts by blanking Western Illinois and Bradley at the Bradley Holiday Inn City Center Classic. He had eight saves in the two matches, including five against Bradley. Counting Butler's 0-0 tie in an exhibition match against #25 St. Louis, Peabody has not allowed a goal in 270 minutes this year...Senior Roberto Gallo scored the game-winning goal in Butler's victory over Bradley. It's his third game-winner in two seasons with the Bulldogs...Sophomore Mark Spiegel, who sat out his first two seasons at Butler because of injury, was cleared to play for the Bulldogs prior to the match against Bradley. He was given his first collegiate start in the contest, and he picked up an assist on Gallo's game-winning goal against the Braves.
