Butler Captures Horizon League Crown With 2-0 Win Over UW-Milwaukee
Nov. 17, 2001 MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Butler men's soccer team captured the Horizon League Championship title by upsetting top-seeded UW-Milwaukee 2-0 on Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Panthers' Engelman Field. The win gives first-year head coach Joe Sochacki's Bulldogs (11-8) their fourth NCAA Tournament berth in the program's history. UW-Milwaukee, which was ranked 15th nationally prior to the match, drops to 18-4 with the loss. Butler scored early in the match, as junior forward Nick Pantazi connected on a 20-yard shot just seven minutes into the contest off of the assist from Chance Ernst. The Bulldogs would quickly add to their lead as Michael Mariscalco's header off Brendan Connor's corner kick at 21:44 would give Butler the 2-0 advantage. The Panthers had many opportunities to get on the board in the first period as UWM attempted 11 cornerkicks and took nine shots in the initial stanza. Butler, however, was limited to just three shots and one cornerkick in the first period. Neither team would capitalize in the second period, as Butler came out with the 2-0 triumph. UW-Milwaukee outshot Butler 23 to nine in the game. Butler's Grant Barrie, who was named the Tournament's MVP, recorded 11 saves on the match.The 11 saves puts sophomore goalkeeper in sixth place on Butler's single-game list. The Panthers' Brad Swenby ended the match with four saves, while allowing both of Butler's goals. Other Butler players who were named to the Horizon League All-Tournament team were freshman midfielder Andrew Pancio, junior midfielder Michael Mariscalco, junior forward Nick Pantazi and senior midfielder Brendan Connor. Butler will await its next opponent as the NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Monday (Nov. 19) at 3 p.m. |
