Musketeers Outlast Bulldogs 3-2

Sept. 13, 2006

Box Score

The Bulldogs traveled to Xavier for an evening match Wednesday, but could not pull out the win, falling 3-2 at the hands of the Musketeers. With the loss, Butler falls to 2-4-1 on the season.

"They scored an early goal, and then we got one after the half," Butler Head Coach Kelly Findley said. "We were playing really well, but then the referee awarded them a penalty kick and it sort of took the wind out of our sails."

Xavier's early goal came in the 20th minute of play, off the foot of Tommy Clines, who found the back of the net off of a corner kick from Josep Sagarra. The Musketeer goal was the only score of the half by either team.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard just 41 seconds into the second half, with Frank Patano taking the ball from Paul Mongillo and putting it in the net from 15 yards out on the right flank. Ten minutes later Xavier's Matt Kmetz was awarded a penalty kick, and put the ball by Bulldog goalkeeper Frank Peabody to make the score 2-1.

"We didn't play great in the first half," Findley said. "We dominated the second half of play until the penalty kick, and still we were getting chances."

The Musketeers scored their final goal of the contest in the 80th minute of play, when Slav Ubiparipovic took a pass up the middle from Ricardo Sutherland and put it in the right corner of the goal.

The Bulldogs would get one last goal in the final minute of the game. Freshman Dorshon Deans tallied the first goal of his Butler career, taking a pass up the left flank from Patano and finding the back of the net from about 15 yards out to close scoring for the game.

"We deserved better, but penalty kicks don't always go your way," Findley said.

Butler looks to rebound in its first home match of the season, as the Bulldogs host Western Kentucky in a 4 p.m. contest Monday.
