Butler Holds Off IUPUI, 1-0
Sept. 13, 2005
Freshman Eduardo Garcia picked up a game-winner with his first collegiate goal to lead Butler to a 1-0 victory over IUPUI in a match played at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis on Tuesday night, Sept. 13. The victory was Butler's fifth straight to open the 2005 season, while IUPUI slipped to 2-2-1. Garcia broke up a scoreless deadlock at 51:13. Senior Scott Olsen started the game-winning play with a pass to senior Tim Blake, who touched the ball to Garcia in front of the goal. The Butler freshman turned and blasted a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the goal from eight yards away. The goal was Garcia's first points as a Butler player. Blake notched his first assist of the season, while Olsen picked up his third assist this year and the 20th of his Butler career. He currently stands in sole possession of third place on Butler's all-time assist chart. The two teams battled to a stalemate through the first 45 minutes of the contest. Both teams had three shots on goal and four corner kicks in the first period. The Jaguars' best scoring opportunity came midway through the second half on a point-blank shot by Adrian Conrad and a rebound shot by Matthew Smith, but senior goalkeeper Frank Peabody stopped both attempts. Peabody finished with a season-high six saves, while recording his fourth shutout in five starts. The Butler defense has allowed just one goal this season! IUPUI goalkeeper Peter Brasovan also had six saves in the match.
Butler will take its longest trip of the season this weekend to compete in the four-team Lobo Invitational at the University of New Mexico. The Bulldogs will face Wisconsin on Friday, Sept. 16, and James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 18. |
