Butler Falls To Iona, 1-0, At North Shore Classic

Iona scored just three minutes into the match and then blanked Butler to claim a 1-0 victory in the second round of the North Shore Invitational in Evanston, Ill., on Sunday, Sept. 5. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-2 on the season, while Iona improved to 1-1.

Paul Racines slipped a rebound shot past Butler goalkeeper Frank Peabody at 3:11 of the match. The unassisted goal proved to be the only score of the match.

The Bulldogs had a 17-13 advantage in shots in the match, but Iona had two more shots on goal (7-5). Junior John Mariscalco led the Bulldogs with three shots, including two shots on goal. Senior Andrew Pancio and juniors Roberto Gallo and Tim Blake had Butler?s other shots on goal.
 

 

Peabody had five saves in the match, before receiving a red card in the 89th minute. Freshman J. J. Weiland played the final minute and had one save. Butler senior goalkeeper Evan Rinehardt received a red card in Butler?s victory over Northwestern on Saturday.

All four teams in the tournament finished with a 1-1 record, but host Northwestern claimed the meet championship based on goal differential. College of Charleston was accorded second place, followed by Iona and Butler.

Butler players Scott Olsen and Aaron Thompson were named to the 11-man, all-tournament team. Northwestern's Gerardo Alvarez was selected as the tournament MVP.
